Redesigned Greenfield Village Opens
[June 10, 2003]
On Friday June 6, DALNET member The Henry Ford previewed the redesigned
Greenfield Village to its members. Music and fireworks accompanied the ribbon-cutting
and dedication ceremonies that included a visit by Governor Jennifer Granholm.
Among the most extensive changes is a redesigned Liberty Craftworks area, where
buildings such as a sawmill, a pottery shop, and a glass-blowing shop are joined by an
operational gristmill on a new pond/lake. This new arrangement makes it much easier to
visit each of these buildings.
Although most village buildings remain in the same place, nine have been
relocated. The new arrangement is more clearly designated by signage denoting
seven distinct districts. Paved streets and sidewalks accompanied with street signs make
it easier to navigate the village and allow visitors to avoid encounters with the various
buses and inevitable horse droppings. The sidewalks include curb cuts for guests using
wheelchairs and other mobile devices.
Another nice change is a completely remodeled entrance in the form of a plaza. The
redesign permits access to the enlarged Village gift shop without having to enter the
village. Additional parking along Village Road is now available.
The official opening for the public is at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10. We encourage
you to take a new look one of the Detroit area treasures.
